Alpine swifts in East Devon area

According to @AFairCoop and a few other local sources, alpine swifts have been spotted in the Colyford region…

Birding sites (for example Rare Bird Alert) have been reporting sightings of the alpine swift in the UK for some time now. Alpine swifts have been regular visitors to Lower Bruckland over the past few years so I suppose there is a good chance of seeing them at the nature reserve again.

If I hear anything else or get hold of any pictures I’ll post an update here.

Update: According to our reporter at the scene, an alpine swift was spotted at Lower Bruckland at 12.53pm, seen flying over the lakes.

Update #2: Steve’s Birding Blog has some photos of the alpine swift

Swallows returning to Lower Bruckland

I’ve just had word from the front line that swallows have been returning to the area and have been spotted at Lower Bruckland. A post at Steve’s Birding Blog a week or so ago would seem to confirm that the timing is about right (Beer is only a couple of miles away for non-locals). No photos yet I’m afraid but there should be plenty of time for that (although send us any you want to share!). A few quick links:

Merry Christmas from Nature in Devon

Nature in Devon wishes all its visitors a very Merry Christmas!

The exciting part is that after Christmas comes New Year, which means new growth (figuratively, and literally). We’re all looking forward to the changes that spring will bring to the nature area. It means new wildlife, new plants, new trees and bushes. We can’t wait!

Over the festive season, things may go a little quiet (since we will be too full to move towards the computer) but rest assured that during our restive walks we will be keeping an eye on developments over the lakes, marshes, and grassland areas in case we have any interesting festive visitors.

We look forward to welcoming you to our little Devon nature reserve in 2010!
